Neath RFC have filled the vacancy on their fixture-list next weekend with an away game at Bryncethin (last visited in 1990) on Friday evening (kick off 7.15pm).
With Neath’s squad relatively injury-free, the Blacks will find Bryncethin capable opponents as they are unbeaten with two massive wins over Glyncorrwg (92-3 away) and Maesteg (88-nil at home).
Although the name Bryncethin will be unfamiliar to most modern Neath supporters, there are strong links between the clubs stretching back to scrum-half Emlyn Thomas who played for Neath before and just after the First World War and earned Welsh trial honours before joining Leigh RL.
Accomplished Wales centre Ron Evans (capped in 1963) played for Neath before moving on to Bridgend and South Wales Police and Neath’s second Scotland international back-rower Wilson Lauder played youth rugby there.
Wales prop Huw Williams-Jones appeared briefly for Neath as did Bryncethin’s current senior coach Peter Bradley. Their enviable junior section has produced, among others, Wales centre Owen Watkin and scrum-half Harri Morgan and products of that fine set-up are now making their presence felt at 1st-team level – evidently with great success.
