Older Neath RFC supporters will be saddened to hear of the passing of David Owen (Pontrhydyfen) after a long illness.
An outside-half with a fine turn of speed, David played 16 games for the Welsh All Blacks in 1961/62 having made his debut in a 9-9 draw at Newbridge the previous season. He scored tries against Briton Ferry and Gloucester before Keith Evans arrived to become Neath’s regular stand-off.
David Owen also turned out for Llanelly and Glynneath and, returning to his home club of Pontrhydyfen, later became a long-serving committeeman of his club and Aberavon District before joining the committee at Aberavon RFC in a life-time’s dedication to the Game.
One of the enduring characters who represented all that was good about the Game, David Owen will be missed at all levels and Neath RFC’s condolences go to his family and friends.
