Neath RFC

Over Christmas, the Neath rugby community was saddened to learn of the passing of two stalwart workers for Youth rugby in the area. The Dulais Valley has lost a tremendous worker in MORRIS DAVIES of Seven Sisters RFC who captained and served as chairman of the club. He later coached Seven Sisters Youth, became secretary of the Neath & District R.U. and was a highly-efficient secretary of the Welsh Youth Rugby Union too.

Former Neath forward GARETH JOHN will also be much missed. “Gabby” also played for Bridgend (whilst doing his national service at RAF St. Athan) and Swansea. On retiring for the game, he returned to coach and manage the Neath Athletic Colts team where his own career had started and he assisted in producing several outstanding sides and many prominent Neath players emerged during his tenure. He served on the Neath & District Youth committee and represented the District on the full Neath Committee.

Although the pair stepped down from “active service” some time ago, both made a huge contribution to the local game and thus to the Neath club. In view of Gabby’s connection with the Swansea club, it is considered appropriate that a minute’s silence in memory of both should be held before next week’s game against Swansea.
