Neath RFC is mourning the passing of Mike Davies who was a long-serving Honorary Surgeon of the Club.
Mike was a very popular figure at The Gnoll where he put his professional expertise to use on a voluntary basis and operated on so many leading players restoring them to full fitness far quicker than might otherwise have been the case.
Mike was the Club’s surgeon throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s during the Club’s “Golden Era” when Neath were riding high and championships and cups flowed to The Gnoll and international touring sides were taken to within an inch.
As such, Mike along with the rest of Neath’s voluntary medical team – featuring Doctors, D.M. Davies, Derek Lewis and Brendan Sheehan and the physios – was a key figure in keeping and getting players on to the field.
Neath’s players were in great demand by Wales so Mike played a role in helping the national team as well as the Club and many ex-players have commented upon Mike’s kindness and professionalism in treating them so expertly.
The Club’s sympathies go to Mike’s family and friends – a wonderful surgeon and true rugby gentleman.
Mike’s funeral will be on Friday, December 13 at Margam Crematorium 2.30pm followed by Neath RFC.
